چکیده

We use surface x-ray diffraction to study the structure of organic-organic heterojunctions grown by organic molecular-beam deposition. In particular, we study films of 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride ~PTCDA! grown on a decanethiol self-assembled monolayer ~SAM! on a Au~111! surface. The deposition of several ('16) monolayers of PTCDA results in unstrained crystalline films whose ~012! lattice planes are rotated 21.6° with respect to the ^112̄& Au azimuthal direction. This alignment, which is different from that of PTCDA on the bare Au~111! surface, is most likely caused by the corrugation of the SAM surface @with the c(432) superlattice of the A33A3R30° unit cell#. The SAM structure was found to be unaltered by the presence of the PTCDA overlayer. In addition, the heterogeneous PTCDA/SAM/Au structure, acting as an x-ray interferometer with the SAM as a spacer, allows for the precise determination of the SAM thickness.

In situ studies of morphology, strain, and growth modes of a molecular organic thin film

We use grazing incidence x-ray scattering to study the molecular structure and morphology of thin ~,70 ML! crystalline films of 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride ~PTCDA! on Au~111! surfaces as a function of film thickness, substrate temperature, and growth rate. Although the first two PTCDA monolayers grow in a layer-by-layer fashion, the film evolution beyond the second monolayer de...

Phase-sensitive surface X-ray scattering study of a crystalline organic}organic heterostructure

An X-ray study of a crystalline organic}organic heterostructure, consisting of a "lm of PTCDA (3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride) grown on a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of decanethiol on Au(1 1 1), is presented. The sandwich structure acts as a `molecular interferometera, where the interference between the Laue function of the PTCDA "lm and the crystal truncation rod (CTR) of the ...

The thermal stability and dewetting effects of crystalline organic thin films on inorganic substrates have been investigated for a model system for organic epitaxy, 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride ~PTCDA! on Ag~111!. The thin films deposited under a variety of growth conditions have been annealed stepwise and studied by in situ x-ray diffraction and noncontact atomic force microsco...

Organic molecular beam deposition: Growth studies beyond the first monolayer

We review recent work on organic molecular beam deposition (OMBD) with emphasis on growth studies beyond the first monolayer, i.e. the evolution of the film structure and morphology. First, we briefly discuss general issues related to growth physics, including epitaxial relations, surface and interface energies, growth modes, correlation functions, dynamic scaling, and growth exponents. We also...

The role of van der Waals interactions in surface-supported supramolecular networks.

The development of a detailed theoretical understanding of surface-supported supramolecular networks is important for designing novel organic nanodevices. By comparing with STM experiments, we show that van der Waals corrections to density functional theory (DFT) in the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) are mandatory to correctly reproduce the electronic and geometric structure of a prot...
